Cost of Food Per Month in Gurgaon: Cook, Order or Tiffin?
By shrishty · October 19, 2026
Quick answer: For one person eating lunch and dinner, cooking at home is the cheapest option in rupees but takes the most time. Ordering in every day is usually the most expensive: 60 orders at ₹300 each comes to ₹18,000 a month. A home-cooked tiffin usually falls in between, at about ₹4,800–₹12,000 a month for two meals a day.
Almost everyone who moves to Gurgaon for work asks the same question in their first month: should I cook, order in, or get a tiffin? The answer feels like it should be simple maths. It rarely is. Grocery bills, gas, a cook's salary, delivery fees, skipped meals and your own evenings all end up in the real number.
This guide works out the cost of food per month in Gurgaon for one person eating two meals a day, 30 days a month (60 meals). We show the working for each option so you can plug in your own numbers. We have tried to be fair, including the places where a tiffin is not the cheapest choice.
A useful starting point: the government's latest household spending survey found that the average urban Indian spends ₹6,996 a month on everything, and roughly 40% of that goes on food. In urban Haryana, total monthly spending per person is higher, at ₹8,428 (MoSPI, Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24). Those are averages across families, though. If you live alone, you lose the savings that come from cooking for four, so your food bill per person is usually higher.
Option 1: Cooking for yourselfOn paper, cooking is the cheapest way to eat. In practice, a one-person kitchen has costs most people do not count until the end of the month.
What goes into the bill
- Groceries: atta, rice, dal, vegetables, oil, spices, milk and curd. [FILL: monthly grocery basket for 1 person, 2 meals a day — price a basic list on a quick-commerce app in Gurgaon and give a range]
- Cooking gas: a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder costs a little under ₹1,000 in Delhi NCR [FILL: confirm the current Gurugram price — it was ₹942 in Delhi in September 2026]. One person cooking twice a day typically gets several weeks out of a cylinder.
- Setting up a kitchen: pressure cooker, tawa, pans, containers and a gas stove are a one-time cost, but a real one if you have just moved.
- Waste: vegetables come in sizes meant for families. Half a cabbage going bad every week is money in the bin.
The cost nobody writes down: time
Planning, shopping, chopping, cooking and washing up for two meals easily take an hour a day. That is about 30 hours a month. If you work long hours or commute from Sohna Road to Cyber City, those hours come out of your sleep, your gym time or your weekends.
What about hiring a cook?
Many working professionals in Gurgaon hire a part-time cook. You still buy the groceries and the gas, and you add a monthly salary on top: [FILL: typical part-time cook rate in Gurgaon for 1 person, 2 meals a day — check with 2–3 local helpers or agencies]. You also have to manage leave days, the menu and the kitchen cleaning.
Cooking makes the most sense if you enjoy it, have the time, and share a flat with people who split the groceries and the cook's salary.
Option 2: Ordering in every dayDelivery apps are wonderful for a Friday night treat. As a daily habit, they are the most expensive way to eat, mostly because of what gets added on top of the food.
Fees that add up
- Platform fee: both Swiggy and Zomato now charge ₹17.58 per order, including GST, after hikes in March 2026 (Storyboard18). On 60 orders a month, that is ₹1,055 before you have paid for a single roti.
- Delivery fees, small-order fees and late-night surcharges, unless you pay for a membership.
- Packaging charges and taxes on the food itself.
A simple worked example
If your average order comes to ₹300 after fees, lunch and dinner every day cost ₹600 a day, or ₹18,000 a month. If you keep it to ₹200 an order, that still comes to ₹12,000. And restaurant portions are designed to taste great once, not to feel light every day. We have written before about how home-cooked food compares with restaurant food for everyday meals.
Ordering in makes sense for an occasional meal, a craving, or a night when nothing else is possible. It is hard to justify as your main source of food for a month.
Option 3: A home-cooked tiffin subscriptionA tiffin sits between the two: someone else cooks home-style food, and you pay a fixed amount per meal. Local listings in Gurgaon put a single tiffin meal at roughly ₹80–₹200, depending on veg or non-veg, portion size and whether delivery is included. For 60 meals a month, that works out to about ₹4,800–₹12,000.
Where tiffin costs hide
- Meals you pay for but do not eat. Weekend trips, late office nights and visits home all count. On a rigid monthly dabba, those meals are simply lost.
- Sundays and holidays off. Some local services do not deliver every day, so you still order in on those days.
- Food you stop enjoying. If the menu repeats every week, you end up ordering in two or three times a week anyway, and the savings disappear.
What makes a tiffin good value
The cheapest tiffin is not always the best deal. Look at the cost of every meal you actually eat and enjoy. Three things matter most: food that tastes like it was cooked at home, a menu that changes, and the freedom to pause when your plans change, without losing money.
For many people, the biggest benefit is not the money at all. It is getting an hour of the evening back. If that sounds like you, read how a monthly tiffin helps you reclaim your time.
Monthly food cost for one person in Gurgaon, side by sideHere is how the cost of food per month in Gurgaon compares across the three options, for one person eating lunch and dinner for 30 days. Use it as a framework, then fill in your own numbers.
| Option | What you pay for | Monthly cost (60 meals) | Your time each month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cook yourself | Groceries + gas + kitchen setup | [FILL: grocery range] + about ₹500 gas | About 30 hours |
| Hire a part-time cook | Groceries + gas + salary | [FILL: grocery range + cook salary] | A few hours (shopping, planning) |
| Order in from apps | Food + platform, delivery and packaging fees | ₹12,000–₹18,000 (at ₹200–₹300 an order) | Almost none |
| Home-cooked tiffin | A fixed price per meal | ₹4,800–₹12,000 (at ₹80–₹200 a meal) | Almost none |
The gas estimate assumes roughly one cylinder every two months. All figures are ranges, not quotes, and prices change by sector and season.
Work out your own number in 4 steps
- Count the meals you really eat at home in a month. Most people overestimate this.
- Add up last month's grocery, gas and delivery-app spending from your UPI history.
- Divide by the number of meals to get your real cost per meal.
- Put a rupee value on the hours you spend cooking and cleaning, even a rough one.
That last step is usually what changes people's minds. Once time is on the table, the cost of food per month in Gurgaon looks very different.
Which option makes sense for you? There is no single right answer. Here is an honest way to think about it:
- Cook if you enjoy it, have a predictable schedule, and share the kitchen and the costs with flatmates.
- Order in for treats and emergencies, not as your daily plan.
- Choose a tiffin if you live alone or work long hours, want a predictable monthly food bill, and miss food that tastes like home.

Frequently asked questionsHow much does food cost per month for one person in Gurgaon?
For lunch and dinner every day, a home-cooked tiffin usually costs about ₹4,800–₹12,000 a month. Ordering in every day can cost ₹12,000–₹18,000 or more. Cooking yourself costs less in cash, but takes around 30 hours a month.
Is it cheaper to cook or to get a tiffin in Gurgaon?
If you only count groceries, cooking is cheaper. Once you add gas, wasted vegetables, a cook's salary or the value of your time, a tiffin is often similar or better value for people who live alone.
Why are food delivery apps so expensive for daily meals?
On top of the food, you pay a platform fee on every order (₹17.58 on Swiggy and Zomato since March 2026), plus delivery and packaging charges and taxes. Across 60 orders a month, those extras add up fast.
Can I pause a BentoBox tiffin if I travel?
Yes. Pause lunch before 11 AM or dinner before 5 PM in the app, up to the number of pause days included in your plan. For more on plans and payments, see our FAQs.
The real cost of a meal is not just what you pay for it, but what it gives back to your day.
